In this day and age, furniture is available in almost any material. Modern furniture is often metal frames, stark contrasting colors and unique designs. These furniture styles look great, and can be comfortable, but many still prefer a cosier, more traditional look. Traditional wooden furniture for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms creates a comfortable and warm feeling in a home or apartment.
The use of wooden bedroom furniture can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where they had wooden chairs, beds and other furniture. These ‘beds’ consisted of a solid wooden slab with an additional board to serve as support for the head. Poorer people at that time had to deal with sleeping outside on a bench, or on top of mud roofs to combat the sweltering heat that accumulated within oven-like dwellings.
In Greece, artists, athletes and politicians all made do with wooden couches, beds and recliners. Fabrics or threaded ropes were draped on the wooden platforms for more comfort and the couches were made so that both ends of the surface were slightly elevated. The Romans also rested on beds that were similar to those of the Greeks’.
Wooden chests often served as beds during the medieval period. These were only for the wealthy, who were the only ones capable of amassing and utilizing heavy oak furniture. Wooden bedroom furniture was also quite popular in China and other Asian countries. The Chinese also had mirrored bedroom furniture, and small tables.
